In the Summer of 2004, a small group of young and
enthusiastic families conceived of the idea of starting their own
shul in North Woodmere. The families wanted to create a shul in
which they would feel comfortable davening and that would be capable
of attracting young frum families to the community. The goal of
the shul would be to create a makom tefilah with an atmosphere
focused on davening and learning – a place that could serve
as a central location for Avodas Hashem for the entire
community. These founding families were drawn to Rabbi Lebowitz's
dynamic personality, wealth of knowledge and incredible middos,
and he was the unanimous choice to serve as the Rav of the new shul.
After converting Rabbi Lebowitz's basement into a temporary space
appropriate for a shul, minyanim began at BKNW (see the donations
page for more information about naming the shul) on Shabbos
Parshas Noach, 2004. Thus far, the shul has proven to be an incredible
success. Not only is BKNW a proper makom tefillah and home
to a number of weekly shiurim, including a daily daf yomi
shiur, but the shul has already attracted a host of young families
to the neighborhood and numerous other families are in the process
of moving into the community.
North Woodmere is a quiet, beautiful neighborhood located only
minutes away from the Five Towns' shopping, restaurants and schools,
as well as the communities of Cedarhurst, Woodmere and Lawrence
and is home to a state-of-the-art park that offers activities for
children of all ages.
Many houses are currently for sale in the neighborhood. If you
are interested in learning more about BKNW or would like to spend
a shabbos in our neighborhood, please contact Rabbi Lebowitz at
(516) 295-1491 or any of the other members of the shul listed on
our contact page.
